Don’t fall for these myths about switching power companies
Switching is easy, and quick, and there’s no interruption to your supply. Plus, some of us can save hundreds.
Last year a record 2 million-plus Aussie homes switched power companies to save up to hundreds of dollars.
How things have changed. It wasn’t that long ago that many of us were unaware you could switch at all!
You can now choose between competing energy providers in most states: NSW, SE QLD, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia (gas only).
Switching is quick and easy, but there are still some myths out there about changing providers. Here, we sort the fact from the fiction:
FACT: Some households can save hundreds of dollars a year by switching to a more competitive offer. In fact, the Australian Energy Regulator says the difference between the best and worst offers in some states is over $1000!

FACT: Have you got a spare 5 minutes to save potentially hundreds of dollars? Because sometimes that’s all it takes. You can complete a switching form online in under 5 minutes. Then you just wait for your next meter read and you’re switched. It’s as simple as that. All you need to get started is a drivers licence or passport for ID and a computer or phone.
FACT: Electricity & gas are different to other products such as insurance. No matter who you buy your electricity from, it’s the same stuff they’re selling. Retailers compete on price and customer service – so don’t be fooled by fancy branding or other marketing tricks.
FACT: Switching is a seamless process with no interruption to your electricity. All that happens is that the company responsible for your meter changes over at your next meter read. You won’t be caught without power.
