How Richard Wilkins increased his electricity discount by 600%

After years of watching his electricity bill increase, Nine’s Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins decided he needed to take matters into his own hands.

He recruited 9Saver Campaigner Joel Gibson to take a look at his bill and together they negotiated a seven-fold increase in his discount, potentially slashing thousands of dollars off his bills in the coming years.

“In one ten minute phone call we went from 4% discount to 28% discount,” said Richard.

Joel Gibson says negotiating a better deal is easier than you think, as long as you have a good offer and you’re prepared to switch. There are 3 simple steps:

  • Step 1: Grab the latest 9Saver special offer.
  • Step 2: Call your provider and tell them you’re thinking of switching: ask to speak to the ‘retention team’.
  • Step 3: See if they can beat it. Decide if you want to switch or stay.

“The key is to get a better offer in your hand, that’s when the really good offers come out because your retailer will fight tooth and nail to keep you,” said 9Saver’s Joel Gibson.

When customers threaten to leave, a provider will most likely make a retention offer.

In Richard’s case, he used a 9Saver energy deal and was made a retention offer which resulted in a 600% increase on his discount.

“You have to make the phone call with that really good offer in your hand, because that’s your leverage in the negotiations,” added Gibson.

Government websites such as Energy Made Easy, Victorian Energy Compare and Service NSW Energy Switch are a great place to start to uncover the cheapest plans on the general market based on your circumstances including usage, location and if you have solar panels.

Alternatively you could do what Richard did and see if your provider can beat the 9Saver Energy Offer, which is the sort of special deal that isn’t necessarily on government comparison sites.

In the coming weeks 9Saver will unveil a series of new energy offers as part of the 9Saver Bill Buster Campaign, plus give 10 lucky members the chance to win a years worth of free power.

A recent report by the Australian Energy Market Commission revealed one in four people switched retailers to get a better deal in the past year.

“If you haven’t shopped around in the past 12 months, you could be paying hundreds more per year for electricity than you need to,” said Gibson.
